You gotta be kidneyin' me!
Last week my body betrayed me. Deep down in the darkness of my kidney something sinister was being born. Although only millimetres in diameter, this thing, would ultimately lead to pain on a level I have not experienced before.
I had produced a kidney stone. Why? No reason, according to the urologist. We are all allowed to produce one in our lifetime with no cause for alarm. Produce another one and that is when they start to keep an eye on you.
So, it was Monday the 7th of April when it first hit me. It was rather like what I imagine getting stabbed in the side is like. Excruciating, awful pain. So a quick trip to A&E in Loughlinstown Hospital was in order. The pain subsided, I had a quick CT scan and was sent home and told that I would feel the odd bout of pain, but would pass it soon. Nice one! Not quite. More intolerable pain followed with late night visits to doctors on call for pain killing injections etc. Until finally on Wednesday I decided to go back to A&E in Loughlinstown, as the first doctor I saw there had advised me to do in case the pain returned with gusto, which I assure you it did.
The next doctor I saw was what I would usually call a ‘Prick’. He had a tendency to smirk at me whenever I described the pain and he was even reluctant to give me a note for work. I was sent home and about three hours later I was in A&E in St.Vincent’s University Hospital. Within six hours there I had been scanned, given pain relief (lovely morphine), operated on and was sitting up talking post-general anaesthetic nonsense.
All-in-all I survived my ordeal with no scars or permanent damage, which is always good. I have no scars due to the fact that they were able to use my existing architecture to access the kidney area (if you get me). It was nice to enjoy that post-operation relief in a well-run, well-staffed hospital. I was not impressed by my first encounter with the member of the other place, but I won’t hold a grudge, for too long.
